"Once upon a time, on an island not so far away, I met a lady who reflected the essence of Hawai'i . . . her spirit was free, and beautiful, and a light surrounded her even on the sunniest days . . . and she became my friend and I was truly blessed . . ." Ten years later Carmen got to know "Miki" (as so many folks call her) in an even more intimate way . . . as a subject . . . "I was reminded anew of the light in so many of the people of the islands . . . an innocence, and a nature that ensures warmth . . . no matter the season . . ."

"HAPPY VALLEY: TAKAMIYA MARKET"

(Watercolor on Paper 16X20)
Award Winner "Wailuku Paintout 2005"

The Valley Isle is loaded with "happy places" . . . although "Happy Valley" is a sort of "remnant of the past" it's color and faces reminded the artist to " . . . take pleasure in even the simplest moments, for they, too are fleeting . . ."

--2005

"DREAMBUILDER"

(Watercolor on Paper 20X26)
Private Collection

"Phillip Kahele is one of those folks who just makes you smile . . . From the first minute he started building our "dream home" to the last nail, he was a joy to work with . . . As I worked on this painting, his smile was contagious . . . it's an honor to call Phillip my friend . . ." 2006

"THE DAY AFTER THE LAST THING"
(Watercolor on Paper 20X26)

In the spring of 2005, Carmen accepted a position as Executive Director of the Maui Flower Growers Association . . . one of her first duties was to attend the annual "Ulupalakua Thing" . . . an agricultural and locally grown products "show" and event . . . when she got home, and put all of her purchases on the counter, she looked at them, and saw a painting . . . it wasn't until a few months later she found out that the 2005 celebration would be the "Last Thing . . ."
